Black Gardenia is a gorgeous, evocative trio that authentically recreates the sound of the trip hop era of the 1990s to early 2000s, performing covers of popular favourites such as Portishead’s “Glory Box”, Massive Attack’s “Safe From Harm” and Morcheeba’s “The Sea”. Comprising vocals & acoustic guitar, cut-down jazz kit and keys & loops, Black Gardenia is a modern take on lounge music that’s perfect for setting a very cool and elegant mood.
Singer Malina Hamilton-Smith has been performing across Australia and Asia for a number of years fronting her own award-winning electro-pop band Super Massive.
On keys and loops and in charge of recreating the trip hop sound is accomplished composer and performer Ross Johnston, best known for his work with platinum-selling band Machine Fun Fellatio and most recently acclaimed as music director for new musical theatre shows for Carriageworks and the Opera House.
On drums is Glenn Abbott, also from MGF. Glenn has performed in original and cover bands for twenty years, sharing stages with Robbie Williams, KISS, Duran Duran and Garbage. He has also worked for popular acts such as Tim Freedman and Martini Club and regularly performs alongside DJs in Sydney’s hottest clubs
